About a month ago a number of my daughter’s friends missed school because they went with their parents to Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. On the day it was held I had a number of appointments scheduled. I work as a Travel Agent. My hours are non traditional, truth be told they sometimes feel 24/7, but they are certainly not 9am to 5pm, nor do I work from an actual office.
In my house I have an office, but I also work all over, sometimes in Starbucks, sometimes in my car, sometimes at Disney World. Julia travels a lot with me which while fun, and often our vacation, is also part of my job since the more i travel the more I learn. I put the day out of my mind with the thought that a lot of her life is go to work day with mom.
Last week my boss who owns the agency Once Upon A Time Vacations where I work as an Independent Contractor Travel Agent was in Disney for an event. She is a fabulous boss, but also a good friend-which I know sounds like it could be hard, but she is great at wearing the boss hat when she needs to. She asked if Julia could miss school for a day to experience time at the Grand Floridian where she was staying. and also have us experience the parks all together.
My boss knows I am a stickler about Julia not missing school. So I paused. And then it occurred to me that this was a great opportunity for Julia to see that while I don’t go to work in a traditional office I have a boss and even if it doesn’t always seem like a normal job I am definitely working.
I love what I do-I love helping my clients plan trips, and helping them have priceless memories. I book travel all over the world, but a majority of my clients have me booking travel to Disney. Since I live so close I often am at the resorts and parks checking everything out. Of course Julia is often with me, but this was a unique way to experience checking out Disney.
My boss was staying in a theme park view at the Grand Floridian. This means you can see the fireworks from your balcony. It is surreal to be on your balcony, looking over at Cinderella’s Castle and see the fireworks display. However you cannot hear the music so Julia and I discussed if that made a difference.
Since we live near Disney we usually visit one park when we go, and spend 3-4 hours max. However the day we spent with my boss she was leaving in the later afternoon-so we did what is called park hopping. We went to 3 parks in one day. That was a different type of experience for both of us.
We dropped in for a visit at Tower of Terror, and then headed to Epcot for Frozen Ever After. And we finished up at Magic Kingdom.
It was a great day for all of us. And when we finished the day I thought about how glad I was that I had Julia skip school to spend the day with both myself and my boss at the parks. It may not have been the traditional day for Take Your Daughters and Sons to work, however I don’t have a traditional job so why would I think Julia could only experience it on that day.
If one of the perks of my job is that there is a lot of flexibility then it definitely should be true to have flexibility to take Julia to “work” on not the official Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work. And I definitely see this continuing into 2018-who knows what will be Julia’s day to come to work with me!
