Sunday, April 17th at 2:45am my alarm went off, and by 3:15am I was driving to Epcot for the Star Wars Half Marathon.
Usually my nerves are a wreck with the half marathon, but I was pretty calm. I was on my own with this race. I did get to talking with some other runners-we discussed the congestion the previous day.
Pretty soon it was time to go, and we were off. Once again the congestion was bad. And it didn’t really let up for 4 miles.
I really went into Star Wars Half Marathon thinking this was a one and done. Not being a huge Star Wars fan I couldn’t see what would be the appeal after completing the inaugural year. And after the 10k, the congestion and the debacle of transportation I was positive this would be it.
But…..I actually liked the race. While congestion kept up till mile 4, it wasn’t that bad after mile 3. And running through Hollywood Studios was cool. Yes the road to Animal Kingdom was pretty boring-it’s basically highway and no entertainment.
Once I entered Animal Kingdom though I started loving the race. It was beautiful to be running through it in the early morning. While I didn’t stop for pictures there were a lot of stops set up with lines that were relatively short.
Once back out on Osceola the congestion started again. I just concentrated on getting to ESPN Wide World of Sports. With every step I took I knew I was getting closer to not just finishing but beating the Balloon Ladies. I was so excited at the thought I would come in ahead of them.
When I actually crossed the finish line I could not believe I not only completed the challenge, but with both the 10k and half I never saw the Balloon Ladies.
Unfortunately the trip back to Epcot took almost as long as the day before. But this time I was prepared with extra water.
While I have not decided definitely to sign up again, I am strongly considering running the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon again.
Question: Did you participate in the Star Wars Half Marathon: The Dark Side? If yes how was your experience with the congestion?
