Princess Half Marathon-the final race needed to complete The Glass Slipper Challenge! Saturday night my two roomates and I were in bed with lights out by 8pm. We had all three phone alarms set for 2:30am. Two of us though woke up at 2am, started talking, and woke our 3rd roomate up. She wasn’t happy, but she loves us so she forgave us.
I was nervous, but focused and determined. I knew that self doubts, and fears of being swept would be my downfall. I went to my corral, made my way to the front, and sat down. A few other women were sitting down, and we all started chatting. We were surprised how many were standing-we wanted to save our legs for the race!
The time passed quickly, and pretty soon it was time to go!
At Princess Half Marathon 2013 I had the Balloon Ladies on my heels by Mile 2. All I could think was please let me make it to Magic Kingdom. The problem was once I got to Magic Kingdom I lost my stride because I was busy stopping for pictures- one on Main Street, and one in front of Cinderella’s Castle.
This year my focus was Epcot. No stopping except for water/powerade stops. I also was determined not to keep looking over my shoulder for the Balloon Ladies. Every once in a while I would, and I couldn’t even see because there were a bunch of runners behind me not happy I was slowing down to look over my shoulder. I decided I should just keep my focus on Epcot.
I had some moments during the race where doubt would start creeping in. I pushed the doubt back out, listened to my music, and just kept going. As I neared Mile 11 I started to believe I might actually make it. However it wasn’t till Mile 12 when I knew I was safe. I was in disbelief. I stopped to ask a Cast Member if I was safe from the sweepers. She and another runner confirmed I was safe. I was in Epcot-I would definitely be finishing. I could barely believe it.
I took out my phone. One of my roomates wanted to know where I was, she was worried since I hadn’t answered her texts. My other roomate told her I was on a mission to finish, and probably wasn’t looking at my phone. She was correct. I texted I was at Mile 12. I then texted my dad I was at Mile 12. He and Julia were waiting by the Guest Relations in Epcot.
As I rounded the corner in Epcot to where my dad and Julia were waiting I could see the Balloon Ladies were behind me. I could not believe that they had not passed me!!!!
Of all the reasons I wanted to make it to the finish it was because I knew Julia was excited to see me race. Last year she was so disappointed she didn’t see me because I was swept. I can’t believe I didn’t cry when I looked towards where Julia and my dad were waiting.
I was so touched by the sign she was holding!
My dad said they would meet me at the finish, and I was off to complete the PHM. My friend texted me to stay to the left as I passed the finish.
So close, almost at the finish!
As I passed through the finish I stayed to the left. I headed to where the medals were being handed out, and saw my two roomates. They were yelling and cheering-one of them was crying. The one who wasn’t crying put my medal on me. I absolutely could not believe I really, truly completed The Glass Slipper Challenge!
It is hard to believe Princess Half Marathon 2014 weekend is over! It was an amazing experience, and plans are already under way for Princess Half Marathon 2015!
Question: Are you thinking of being part of Princess Half Marathon 2015?
