HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!

Last summer I was with Julia visiting a good friend and her daughter. She gave both girls ice pops. Julia LOVED it. The girls ran off to play, and the mom showed me how she made them:

On our way home I bought a bottle. It is now a staple in our home!

To add some fun-and make every ice pop a Magical Experience I make them in Mickey Mouse Ice Pop Molds.

We now always have Mickey Mouse Lifeway Kefir Ice Pops in our Freezer. I love it-Julia gets her calcium, and to her it is the same as any other ice pop:

We Adorn You Review

May 24, 2012 at 2:50 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Recently I hosted a Stella and Dot Trunk Show: http://www.stelladot.com/sites/joslyn. It was called for 12:30, and my friends had all been invited to bring their children. I wanted the moms to be able to browse the jewelry knowing their children were being entertained.

I decided that it would be fun to have a face painter come to adorn the faces of the children, while the moms all adorned themselves with jewelry. It was meant to be because I found Lindsey Reit, owner of We Adorn You: http://www.weadornyou.com/. Her company has a number of services to choose from, including: Face Painting, Henna Tattoos, and Glitter Tattoos.

Lindsey has a sweet and easy way about her-and the children were enchanted with her, and the display she put out so that they could choose how they wanted their faces adorned.

I was impressed that Lindsey comes bearing her own chair for the children to sit in. All she needs is a table to place the face paint and she is good to go:

I had Lindsey booked for an hour-and within that hour she adorned the faces of 5 children, plus decorated their arms with pretty designs. All 5 children were thrilled with how they looked as were their moms.

I highly recommend Lindsey’s services-whatever event you are planning she will make it magical and fun. Check out her site: http://www.weadornyou.com/ for a full list of her services. And then book her for your next event!

Disclaimer: I was not paid for this post. However Lindsey offered her services free of charge in exchange for being reviewed. As always all opinions are strictly my own.

Taking a Rest While in Disney World

May 23, 2012 at 8:01 am | Posted in Resting at Disney | Leave a comment

I am a big advocate of going to the Disney Parks when they first open, going back to the hotel midday for a rest whether that is napping or taking a swim, and then heading back to one of the parks in the later afternoon.

However some families want to get there first thing in the morning-and stay until late in the evening. I get this-if you are going 1-2 times a year-you might not want to head back to your hotel for a midday siesta. The following are tips that will give your whole family energy to make it from morning to night at whichever park you are visiting.

Don’t Skip Meals

Eat breakfast, no matter how excited you are to get to the parks. Even if that means a stop in your hotel’s food court, pick up food, and eat on the go. I don’t love eating on the go-but better that than skipping breakfast.

Lunch and dinner should also be eaten-plus a snack between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner. Lucky for you-Disney parks have lots of yummy snacks-easily found throughout the parks.

Use Parades and Shows for Rest Time

Many of the parks have parades and shows-and to make sure you get a seat or a great view you might need to be seated an hour to an hour and half beforehand. We are parade addicts. At both Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios we stake out our spot an hour before the parade starts. I use this as rest time. I put out a blanket, pull out some snacks and let Julia chill with an Ipad or Iphone while I read.

Mix Exhilarating Rides with More Relaxing Attractions

All the parks have rides that exhilarate and attractions that are more low key.

Magic Kingdom

Exhilarating Ride: Great Gambini-a kid friendly roller coaster

Relaxing Attraction: Enchanted Tiki Room-a relaxing and adorable show featuring singing birds and flowers

Hollywood Studios

Exhilarating Ride: Toy Story Mania

Relaxing Attraction: The Great Movie Ride

Animal Kingdom

Exhilarating Ride: Tricera Top Spin

Relaxing Attraction: Finding Nemo: The Musical

Epcot

For young kids there really are no exhilarating rides.Epcot has a lot to see and do-but I suggest going at a leisurely pace, especially in the countries take the time to explore. In many of the countries you will find performers putting on some kind of show-stop and watch.

If you have any tips or suggestions on how to sneak in some resting while at the parks-please share!

Nothing Like A Disney Marathon to Kick Start Working Out!

May 21, 2012 at 1:59 am | Posted in Disney Marathons | 2 Comments

Disney has many marathons throughout the year. My sister did one of the marathons a little over 4 years ago. I know for a fact when it was because I was very, very pregnant with Julia! In fact two days after she raced my doctor thought I was going to need to be induced at 37 weeks because I was showing signs of pre-eclampsia. My parent’s quickly lost their high of having watched their younger daughter finish an amazing race as they scrambled to make it back to NYC! (Thankfully I did not need to be induced, and Julia stayed put for another 2 weeks).

In the past year I have been working on losing weight-and it has gone slower than I would like. I need to start working out-and while I do go to the gym my workouts leave a lot to be desired. I need something to kick my butt into gear. I decided a Disney Half Marathon was just the thing I needed for motivation.

Years and years ago I used to run. I was never fast, never trained for any kind of races, but I was in shape. That is what I want to get back to. I looked up Disney races.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend sounded intriguing-however I was nervous about a few things-it is at the end of September so I was not sure I could really be in shape for it, also it is at 10pm-which is kind of late for someone who is usually asleep by that time, or at least in bed. It ended up being a moot point-it is sold out.

It is impossible to go to Disney World as much as I have, and subscribe to as many Disney blogs as I do not to have heard about the Disney’s Princess Half Marathon. I decided to look this up.

http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/rundisney/princess-half-marathon/

It is the weekend of Feb. 22-24th-which is great because I know I will be down there that week. It sounds like fun. And it gives me plenty of time to be well trained for the race.

I kicked off my training this weekend. I picked perfect weather to begin running.

I am excited (although truth be told pretty sore since I ran Friday and today).

I also have convinced a dear friend of mine to join me in this adventure. She writes an amazing blog everyone should check out- Hera Sports Media: http://herasportsmedia.com/. I am excited she wants to do it as well, because the weekend will be even more amazing with her, plus I know she will be into coming up with a personalized t-shirt for Julia to wear as she cheers us on!

I invite you on this journey with me. I would love to hear about any tips or suggestions you have. And if you have ever dreamed of running a race, consider the Disney’s Princess Half Marathon-if I can pull this off-ANYONE CAN!

Happy Running!

Don’t Miss Out On Adding to Your Child’s Dress Up Collection!

May 18, 2012 at 10:09 pm | Posted in Zulily | Leave a comment

We have a lot of dress up clothes-in fact recently I redid Julia’s room to create a dress up area.

When it comes to dress up I am always looking to keep it fresh and updated. There is nothing worse than Julia’s friends to be over, and realize that all the costumes are too small.

In addition-we need a selection for our trips to the theme parks since Julia would never enter a Disney park without being dressed in a costume.

The prices of well made costumes can be pricey. So I am always scouring the sites for a discount.

Zulily: http://www.zulily.com/?ref=logo sells amazing items at very discounted prices. I did very well today in replenishing Julia’s dress up outfits today with:

Story Book Wishes: http://www.zulily.com/e/story-book-wishes-051612.html?pos=25

Julia is ecstatic to be getting:

Actually truth be told I ordered the cape along with some other Princess outfits, showed Julia and she asked how she was going to wear the cape without Sleeping Beauty’s dress-good point Julia-I quickly ordered it.

I had however already ordered:

Yes-Julia recently got a new Belle dress-but it’s pretty common for at least 2-3 of her friends to all want to be Belle. Having an extra will eliminate a lot of tears!

And they have a number of boy costumes as well!

The sale for Story Book Wishes ends 5/19- 6am TOMORROW! Hurry and go order.

To Monorail or Not to Monorail

May 15, 2012 at 4:06 pm | Posted in To Monorail or Not To Monorail | Leave a comment

If I had a nickel for every time someone asks me if it is worth it to stay at one of the three hotels which are on the monorail-well let’s just say I could probably move into one of those hotels for an entire year!

The three hotels are:

Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The first thing I tell people is you cannot go wrong with any Disney hotel-whether a Value, Moderate or Deluxe-you will enjoy. Disney knows how to run a first rate hotel, and make sure their guests have a fabulous experience.

That being said-the three hotels on the monorail line are considered Deluxe and have a level of luxury you will not find at the Value or Moderate hotels. Plus all three have monorail access to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot (although you will have to transfer monorails to get to Epcot).

If you have small children, and will be dealing with stroller(s) and can afford one of these three hotels you might find it worth it. While every Disney hotel has frequent transportation whether by monorail, bus or boat, these three hotels have the easiest and quickest transportation to the Magic Kingdom. In addition, when you go on one of the buses you will have no choice but to fold your stroller. It is a regulation (which I found out when staying at the Fort Wilderness and was taking a bus to Hollywood Studios). While you might have to fold your stroller on the monorail if it is super busy-in all my times on it-and I have gone on some of the busiest days-I have never had to fold my stroller.

Staying at one of the three hotels is definitely worth pricing out and seriously considering, but no matter where you stay you will have a Magical time!

Protect our Children!

A rule that needs to be changed!

Back on January 1st, 2012 I started the new year off by being kicked off a plane while traveling with Julia.
Why did this happen you ask? Did I make threatening remarks? Did I yell bomb?
No- I got upset because the seats that I paid extra for to guarantee I would be seated next to my 3 year old daughter, Julia, were taken by other people, and the stewardess told me I had no right to them.

She wanted me to wait (not sure where I was supposed to wait that was never made clear) till everyone had been seated. I was essentially told to get out of the way with my 3 year old in tow plus our two carry on bags.

I admit I yelled at the stewardess that this was unacceptable. I wanted to be able to sit down with Julia.

This got me escorted off the plane with Julia. Julia was hysterical. She was crying. Passengers offered to give us their seats. We were treated like criminals- all the while  my daughter sobbing- we will never get back to NYC- I will never see my daddy again.

This was not a good start to 2012.

I would love to name the airline, and I might at some point. However that is not the point of this post. NOTE- I know people will be trying to guess which airline. I fly Delta 99.9% of the time- it was not them.

Why did I get so upset? I fly 4-5 times a year. I am aware of the fact that at age 2 an airline is under no obligation to seat the child with his/her parents/caretaker. They can be separated and seated next to strangers.
I knew once everyone was seated there would be no guarantee that there would be two seats next to each other,  and the airline was under no obligation to seat us together. The thought of my child being seated next to a stranger brought out the Mama Bear in me. I started to panic. I could not let that happen.

But the truth is- it should NEVER happen to anyone, but it does.

I personally know people whose children as young as 2 have been seated away from them. What usually ends up happening is some seat shuffling by passengers so a child can be seated with at least one of the adults he/she is traveling with. However until that happens the parent/caretaker(s) are stressed and freaking out.

I have witnessed this first hand-and being an emotional person I almost started to panic, and it was not even my child. In Feb 2011 I was on a flight from Orlando to NYC. It was a full flight. Many adults traveling together had not been seated together, and were trying to get passengers to switch all the while the staff begging them to just take their seats. I can see how  not being seated with your traveling companion(s) could be frustrating, but they were adults.

I was in a row of 2-just Julia and me. Across was a row of 3. There were 2 elderly women in the aisle and middle seat. I saw a mom, dad, a little girl who looked about 3, and an infant. The mom and the infant went into the seat that was right behind me. The dad was seating the little girl in the row with the 2 elderly women. He asked the woman in the middle seat if she would take his seat which was in the row right behind this one by the window. She said no-she said not to worry-she would be a grandmother to the little girl. For the record it took every fiber in my being not to jump up and tell her how selfish she was being. The woman in the middle seat right behind this selfish woman must have realized what was happening, because she offered to give the little girl her seat, and sit in the seat assigned to the little girl.

I was relieved. Once we were enroute to NYC the mom and I started chatting. I asked how the little girl got seated away from them. She said they were all assigned different seats, and the airline claimed they could not switch the seats, but they were sure someone would switch with her husband once on the plane. I asked the age of her daughter. The mom said 2.5. I commented that her daughter seemed to be handling it well. The mom said she did not think her daughter really understood that her father would not be sitting with her.  How would you even explain that to a child. The mom said they were hoping someone would switch. Luckily it all worked out, and the little girl did not have the chance to really be aware of what was happening. Trust me-you know how everyone dreads the crying, screaming child on a flight. Make a young child sit with a complete stranger, and I can almost guarantee hysterics from the child will begin.

This is outrageous! I really believe that the majority of adults flying with children do not realize this is a possibility, because if they did the airlines would be under pressure to change this policy. My belief is that the families that this happens to end up with a kind adult switching at the last minute-and it becomes a non-issue. But I have now heard stories, and talked with many parents who basically had to worry up until they boarded the plane that their young child would be sitting with a stranger.

On a personal note-2 years ago one of my friends was flying from NYC to Europe. She was traveling alone with her 2.5 year old and 6 month old. The airline had seated the 2.5 year old in a different row, and said there was nothing they could do. Once again, it worked out once she was on the plane-but not only was she stressed at the thought of flying for the first time with an infant and a toddler by herself, she had the added anxiety of her 2.5 year old sitting next to a stranger without her.

I realize that the first response is to start making jokes-sounds great-I’ll sit back and relax while someone else deals with my child. But that is exactly the point. Do you as a parent, or do you know any parent who would just let some random stranger take care of their child. Plus the passenger(s) next to your child has no responsibility for them-your child is on his/her own. What if there is an emergency on the flight-is the passenger next to your child going to help with the oxygen mask? What if the child needs help with entertainment, snacks, opening a juice box?  What if the child gets sick?

Two days after I got escorted off the January 1st flight, Julia and I were on a Delta flight back to NYC. Upon the descent Julia threw up-it was all over me, it was all over her. She was crying and upset. I had to use my cashmere sweater to clean up the mess. How would a stranger deal with this? Would anyone be helping her. Remember this happened on the descent-a parent would not even be able to get up and help with the situation.

Taking the concerns a step further-parents/caretakers have no way of knowing who is sitting next to their child. We are talking about very young, defenseless children-a 2 year old cannot protect him/herself. In a world where parents demand and have a right to know who is interacting with their children, it is unthinkable that airlines have the right to let a child as young as 2 sit next to a complete stranger.

My purpose in posting this is to get the attention of parents, the airlines, congress, everyone and anyone. There needs to be a mandated law that if a minor child is boarding a plane with a parent/caretaker he or she must be seated with at least one member of their party.

Protect our children.
